Most Accurate and Reliable Inverse of a Nonsingular nxn Matrix - (THE SIMPLE WAY) Students should memorize the Gaussian Elimination with Complete Pivoting, GECP, method. Let A represent any real, nonsingular matrix. Then P_r*A*P_c^T=L*U where P_r and P_c are orthonormal row and column permutation matrices, L is a lower triangular matrix with unity diagonal, and U is an upper triangular matrix with nonzero pivotal elements on the diagonal. A^{-1) = P_c^T*U^{-1}*L^{-1}*P_r^T. Because the respective L and U matrices are lower and upper triangular, their inverses are easily obtained recursively. Complete pivoting is required to insure that the largest pivotal elements are always used to avoid dividing by numbers too close to zero and to maximize accuracy of the results. GECP will also detect rank deficiency and provide factors of the best, largest nonsingular sub-matrix of A.
